As an update to the right platform. After discussing the project a bit more I decided to use both WordPress and a Yahoo! store. The project is for an charitable organization and the goal of the store is ultimately to make money for the charity. After looking at similar products, the goals of the organization and considering maintenance, I decided to use the Yahoo! store for storefront and use WP for the bulk of the content areas of the site - in fact we decided to have a whole separate site for the charity.
The reasoning behind this was quite simple. The store was not going to generate organic visitors through its content and trying to weave in the necessary content would not have allowed me to give the end-user full flexibility and editing capabilities they needed. Further, the retail site was only a part of what this organization was doing hence, I felt that it would be a better approach to us the blog/organization as the hub with the retail site (the Yahoo! store) as a spoke. Further, I felt that using the charity as a selling point was a weak approach ( I don’t think that where the profits go on a retail purchase will make a bit impact on the buying decision) and that they would be better off focusing on their organization and after they have sold people on the organization, take them to the retail site to support the organization by buying some of their products.
One thing to remember. Content is king. In this case, it is easier to drive traffic around the content of the organization than around the content of the store. The organization’s mission provides a lot of opportunity to create content pages on a wide variety of topics, thus making it a little easier to bring organic traffic to the site. Also, we wanted the focus to be on the organization and not have store be one of multiple ways to support the organization.
