On The Cheap Profile - Bento Yum

I came across Bento Yum while reading an SEO Blog. Bento Yum was started by Jennifer Laycock as a result of an opportunity that presented itself to her. She herself was making Bento style lunches for her family and was coveting, as she puts it, the accessories that Japanese bentos typically have. She lamented the lack of bento supplies on her blog, and a reader in Japan contacted her and was willing to buy some supplies for her. She then registered the domain name of bentoyum.com and built a small site around it where she blogged about her bento “haul” as she puts it. She quickly realized there were others who wanted in on the goods she was writing about.

So, contact the Japanese friend, ad a page to her bento yum blog to sell some kits, add in paypal buy buttons, and she is off and selling. How hard is that?

Well it is not hard at all. In fact, you can probably do it without knowing any real coding at all. Buy a domain (easy). Install Wordpress (easy). Install a skin (little harder than easy). Add paypal script (little harder than easy). Don’t believe me? You can buy a domain at GoDaddy and the hosting package at GoDaddy. In their hosting section they have an add-on section that automatically installs some of the most popular open source packages on the web (open source = free). You literally click on 2 buttons, fill in 5-6 lines of information (username and password comprising most of it) and you are done. From there on you can work out of a web interface (except for uploading the skin but that is for another post). Still to tough, higher the neighbors kid for $100. He/she will have it done for you in 10 minutes.

And cost? Roughly $8.99 for the domain name and $5.99 per month of hosting (and $100 if you need to hire the neightbors kid…you can also call me if you prefer). $15 dollars and your website is set up.

Since Jennifer ships all her product directly from Japan, she has no inventory or any risk associated with inventory. Beautiful. All she has to do is get interested people to the site. It may not be a million dollar site but it certainly has the potential to push the six figure mark.
