If you are a photographer today, and are hoping that someone finds your work and will commission you to do more, you will want to build a website. It is all part of building and maintaining a professional image. Don’t get me wrong, places like Flickr, smugmug and pBase are great, but they are really more of a place to broadcast your work and have people find you (and your site) as opposed to being your sole online representation - think of them more as advertising. I haven’t really found a comprehensive list of photo hosting sites online so here they are. I have the sites into a couple of categories. Almost any of them will do the job and get you a professional looking site - especially the “Plug n Plays”.
Plug n Play:
http://www.livebooks.com
http://www.clikpic.com
http://www.foliolink.com
http://www.photobiz.com
http://www.nancyscans.com
http://www.sitewelder.com
http://www.portfoliocity.com
http://www.portfolios.com
http://www.bigblackbag.com
http://www.workbook.com
http://www.lebook.com
http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/
http://www.zenfolio.com
A little work (this is more of the do it yourself option and can be a very good one):
http://www.jalbum.net
http://coppermine-gallery.net/
http:www.pixelpost.com
One last set of options (more of an add on to a self-built site):
http://www.photoshelter.com
http://www2.digitalrailroad.net
The Generics (everyone has one of these, almost)
http://www.flickr.com
http://www.pbase.com
http://www.smugmug.com
Finally, if you have a bunch of images that you are looking to sell, check out http://www.featurepics.com. They let you do some interesting things with their code if you know just a little html. This isn’t something you would want to use for your main gallery but it certainly is an easy way to add on a stock photo section to an existing site.
There may be others out there and I’ll gladly add them to the list, just shoot me a comment.
