Apple is a company that knows how to market their products, no doubt about that. Think back a couple years ago when the iPod first launched. Interesting little gizmo. Some funky marketing and wham, ipods are ubiquitous and everyone else is trying to play catch-up. The iPhone is no different. Never mind the fact that it probably doesn’t or won’t do anything better than your existing phone or that you don’t need 90% of the features that it offers. That’s not the point. The iPhone is all about the cool factor.
Why mention this? Well when you are starting out your business, you want to think about your niche and how you can create and build the cool factor around what you are doing. Obviously, for products the cool factor is more important but it holds for services or information as well. Figuring how to differentiate yourself and your product is what is going to make you successful (all other things being equal). You may not figure it out right away, but do some research and look at what other companies in totally unrelated industries are doing and see if you can’t apply some of their secret sauce to your venture.
