One of the best ways to bring traffic to your site, especially a retail site, is to become an expert in the product you are selling. I can’t overstate the importance of this. There are two reasons for this.
1) It is a part of the service you provide to people looking for your product. Just like going to brick & mortar, the better the more knowledgeable the staff the better. The knowledge of the staff (as well as service and friendliness) is the primary factor that small retail stores are able to compete with chain stores. It is no different online. You obviously have to price competitively, but aside from that, you have to help and educate your customers, both by what you offer online in terms of resources as well as when they call you.
2) Organic traffic. One of the best ways to get organic traffic to your site is to provide useful information. Your goal should be for your site to become the repository for information related to the product/s you are selling. Why, quite simply. Search engines love good content. Further, when someone is just looking for information (as opposed to on a buying mission), they are more likely to come across your site. While they may not buy on that first visit, by fulfilling their informational need, they will likely be back to fulfill their purchase need should they need your product (again, all other factors being equal). After all, wouldn’t you rather be buying something from an expert in the field as opposed to just another store…especially if you have a question?
